July 8 2023: 2nd year Anniversary of the murder of jared Lowndes
24 months. 2 years. Saturday July 8 marks the second anniversary of #JusticeForJared.
Photos taken in so-called Campbell River - Xwemalhkwu/Homalco Territory.
With grateful thanks to beloved family of Jay - including Ashleahaa, Tanya & his cousins who set up memorials at the site where Jared took his last breaths – the Campbell River Tim Hortons.
On Saturday afternoon, family of Jared Lowndes and supporters gathered in Vancouver at Grandview Park to acknowledge this event at Honouring Their Names: Indigenous Justice and Healing. Out of respect for the DTES Powwow honouring Salish Matriarch Kat Zu'comulwat Norris, the memorial took place from 1-3 PM, so people can attend the 4 PM dinner at 5 PM Grand Entry.
The event envisioned what justice &healing can look like – on unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, səlilwətaɬ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nations, on the yintah, and across the territories colonially know as canada.
This anniversary started with the filing of a civil suit against the BC Ministry of Public Safety & Solicitor General and 4 unidentified Campbell River Officers. This fight will take years.
